Our history

1817 - 1886
Textile Enterprise
In 1817, Pietro Sella imported and replicated spinning machines from Belgium, launching the family’s textile business in Biella. His brother Giovanni Battista soon followed.
In 1827, Quintino Sella was born. A major figure in Italian history, he served as Minister of Finance, founded the Italian Alpine Club, helped create the Turin Polytechnic, and revived the Accademia dei Lincei, later inspiring the family's entry into banking.
By 1835, the textile factory moved to the Cervo stream to harness water power, introducing mechanical looms. In 1886, Gaudenzio Sella, with brothers and cousins, founded Gaudenzio Sella & C., the bank that would grow into today’s Sella Group.

1970
Chubb Machines
In the 1970s, Banca Sella was the first in Italy to introduce Chubb machines, the ancestors of the ATM, allowing Customers to withdraw money automatically.
Banca Sella adds Treasury Bills (BOT) to its managed savings offer. It is among the first banks in Italy to sell Treasury Bills at its branches.

1997
Internet Banking
In 1997, Banca Sella is among the first banks to provide a real-time information internet banking service in Italy. It also joins the first e-commerce program with Microsoft and the Yahoo. Sella joins the venture by managing the first e-commerce transactions at European level for a tie shop. In the same year, it is a first mover in the field of electronic payments.
In the spring of 1998 the first online revolution takes place - the home banking service allows Customers to perform bank transactions online. The first online account in Italy is launched, Winconto. Still in 1998, Banca Sella carries out the first purchase of shares sent to the Italian market through the internet. A lot of 1000 Fiat shares gives birth of the Online Trading service.

Fintech District
The Sella Group fosters the birth of the Fintech District in Milan - the access point to the Italian fintech ecosystem that brings together startups, entrepreneurs, financial institutions, investors and universities, intending to promote the development of the financial industry of the future and the growth of companies in the sector. Today the Fintech District brings together over 300 fintech companies.

Establishment of Fabrick, an open financial ecosystem enabling and fostering collaboration between banks, corporations and fintech companies to create innovative solutions for its end customers through the Fabrick Platform: a platform aggregating, integrating and coordinating a growing number of APIs and services.

Sella Venture Partners
Sella Venture Partners is the alternative asset management firm of Sella Group dedicated to Venture Capital.
In a world characterized by technological disruption, Venture Capital facilitates innovations allowing them to be developed into marketable products. As such, it lays the foundations for creating and attracting tech firms and ensuring future economic growth.
